The verb "ESTAR" in Spanish

In Spanish the verb "estar" means "to be", same as the verb "ser". But "estar" is used to indicate more temporary states ("I am ready" - for example).

Estar is an irregular verb, which means that you just have to memorize its forms.

Here is how the ver estar is conjugated in the present tense:

Pronoun	Present verb form
Yo	estoy
Tú	estás
Él, Ella, Usted	está
Nosotros, Nosotras	estamos
Vosotros, vosotras	estáis
Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes	están

In all there are 5 specific areas in which "estar" is used instead of "ser".

Use	Example
Position	Estoy sentado (I am sitting down)
Location	El libro está en la mesa (the book is on the table)
Actions	Tú estás caminando (you are walking)
Conditions	Está lloviendo hoy (it is raining today)
Emotions	Estoy feliz (I am happy)
