Talking about people's ages

In English, we say someone "is" so many years old. e.g. Tom is 14.

In Spanish, to talk about people's ages, we use the verb TENER (have):

Él, Ella, UstedTIENE
Ellos, Ellas, UstedesTIENEN

To say your age you can say: Yo tengo 20 años. (I'm 20 years old.)

If someone wants to know your age, they might ask: ¿Cuántos años tienes tú? (How old are you?)

To ask someone's age you could say:

  • ¿Cuántos años tienes tú?
They might answer: Yo tengo quince años. (I'm 15 years old; literally: I have 15 years.)
  • ¿Cuántos años tiene él? (How old is he?)
They could answer: Él tiene trece años. (He is 13 years old.)
