el padre = the fatherla madre = the mother

To talk about your family you can say:

  • Yo tengo dos hermanos. Sofía es mi hermana y Luis es mi hermano.
    I have two siblings. Sofía is my sister and Luis is my brother.
  • No tengo hermanos. Soy hijo único.
    I don't have any siblings. I'm an only child.

NOTE: The Spanish word “pariente” is a false cognate (false friend). “Pariente” does not mean “parent”; it means “relative”.

To express the relationship between members of the family, you can say:

  • Mi tío Adolfo es el hermano de mi padre. Su hija Laura es mi prima, y yo soy la sobrina de mi tía.
    My uncle Adolfo is my father’s brother. His daughter Laura is my cousin, and I am my aunt’s niece.
  • ¡Hola! Soy Laura Ramos. Mis abuelos son Pedro y Elisa Ramos. Yo soy su nieta.
    Hi! I'm Laura Ramos. My grandparents are Pedro y Elisa Ramos. I am their granddaugther.

Talking about people's ages

In English, we say someone "is" so many years old. e.g. Tom is 14.

In Spanish, to talk about people's ages, we use the verb TENER (have):

YoTENGO
TIENES
Él, Ella, UstedTIENE
Nosotros/asTENEMOS
Vosotros/asTENÉIS
Ellos, Ellas, UstedesTIENEN

To say your age you can say: Yo tengo 20 años. (I'm 20 years old.)

If someone wants to know your age, they might ask: ¿Cuántos años tienes tú? (How old are you?)

To ask someone's age you could say:

  • ¿Cuántos años tienes tú?
    They might answer: Yo tengo quince años. (I'm 15 years old; literally: I have 15 years.)
  • ¿Cuántos años tiene él? (How old is he?)
    They could answer: Él tiene trece años. (He is 13 years old.)
