Uso del imperativo en español

The Imperative in Spanish is a verb form that is used to give an order to someone, to make a suggestion to do something, to provide recommendations, offer advice, prohibit actions or make a request.

There are various forms of the imperative in Spanish that use - tú, nosotros, usted, ustedes.

Examples in English: Pass me the salt. Open the door. Do not wait. Let's eat something.

There are standard forms for verbs in both affirmative and negative forms ending in -ar, -er, and -ir.

<p class=Note that the imperative form for "tú" changes depending on whether it is in the affirmative or negative .. For example: "Entra" - Come in, but "No entres" - Don't come in.

 

Examples:

Come tu helado: (tú form) Eat your ice-cream
Coma tu helado: (usted form) Eat your ice-cream
Hable con él Speak to him (singular "usted" form)
No hablen con él Don't speak to him (plural "ustedes" form)
Tomemos un café Letś have a coffee
¡Viva para hoy! Live for today!

There are also irregular forms in the imperative that follow the irregular present form of the verb

Quiero = quiera, tengo = tenga, traigo = traiga, puedo = pueda

In addition, there are some imperative forms that do not follow any rule. These you just have to memorize:

Note the negative imperative in "tu" form for the above verbs: no seas, no estés, no vayas, no tengas, no vengas, no salgas, no hagas, no digas, no pongas.

Examples:

Sea amable Be nice
Da la manzana a tu hermana Give the apple to your sister
Vaya a la cocina Go to the kitchen
Ven conmigo Come with me
Haz tu trabajo Do your work
